Random shots in an amazing light
I took some photograph this evening. I looked out of the window, and the fog was just lingering on the fjord. I grabbed my camera and ran out. I must have photographed this view a thousand times, but I still like it. I also like the colors in green and grey, when you look at the fjord from the hotel. I then took the car and photographed the bales, which these days are organized to form one long piece of Land Art through the whole village because of the bale festival. See the rundballe (bale) blog The festival is at this weekend. I'll be working in the hotel, and hopefully go to another art show opening with Aase Kvikne Bjordal, a very competent artist, who's now 85 and whos work from the 60's and 70's will be on display at Eikaasgalleriet

Land Art project in Fjærland

In a weeks time there will be the opening of a Land Art project in Fjærland, called the Rundballe festival. Rundballe is the big white "eggs" that are lying around on farmed land, and substitutes the process that the silo used to do to the grass. Artist Magne Vangsnes is these days placing them around in the fields to make differendt formations, see Rundballeblog for more pictures. This is a neat and rather interesting way of seeing literally "down to earth" objects suddenly take ona new form. I get many thoughts about landscape, form and and our influence on and perception of these concepts. (ugly vs. beatuiful, artificial vs. natural etc.) Hope you enjoy the pictures, which I did last Wednesday.

Sheep and so forth
I'll put in some photos from a friend of mine, Knut, who's a farmer. His sheeps are called gammelnorsk spelsau, an ancient norse sheep race. Apparantly their wool is very strong, and they have two layers of it, the top which protects from water, and under layer which is more curly. Last week, Gjøa, who holds courses in needle filting and I, spent a day washing and carding some of this wool ourselves. The carding was alot of fun and we are now looking for someone who can spin it. Gjøa is also going to try to make something out of it in filting. I'll get back with more pictures later.
Knut also sent me some photos from hunting in the mountains around Fjærland. He gave me these photos while I was making the web page for The book town festival. I made an extra page there, only of his photos, as I liked the idea of a farmer who walks around with camera in his pocket, taking pictures.

The best picture this summer

...is of my nephew, Thorvald. As I'm living at my parents' house for the time being, I got to be with him several days when my sister and her husband came to visit. Thorvald is six months old, puts everything in his mouth, bends my glasses inwards-out, and drules all over whover's holding him. It's great.
The other picture is from Sølve and Leifs cabin near Mølen, where there are beaches with rolling stones, and Viking burial heaps (?) Probably not the right word for it, but never mind. Sølve is my wild friend from schooldays who has now turned into mature herb-growing interior-focused woman, all because of love :-)
I'm back in Fjærland now, I quit the job that I've had for eight years in Balestrand. I'm not sure what I'll be doing in the future, a thought that is wonderful and scary at the same time. In September I'm going to Spain, to Jerez de la Frontera. But that only lasts ten days, so I guess I'll have to come up with something better than that...
I finish off this blog with a small thing I made tonight, for the Rundballe festival, which is taking place in Fjærland 25 - 27. August. I'll probably write more about it later, but in short, it's Land Art made of those white balls of hay that you can see everywhere in the countryside. Norwegian artist Magne Vangsnes is responsible for placing ten thousand of these white balls around in the landscapes. If I was submitted to bad pun-making I could say that the farmers all trusted him with there balls, but am I going to do that? Absolutley not. Good night.

Ceasefire campaign
In my mail box a few days ago I received the e-mail from a campaign for a ceasefire petition in the Middle East. No matter what side we take in the crisis in the MiddleEast I'm sure we can all agree that the war that is now going on, with civilian losses on both sides, has to stop. Please help the campaign in signing the petition!
Excerpt from todays update:
"Dear Friends,
As the awful civilian death toll rises above 1000 in Lebanon and Israel, people around the world are seeking a place to voice their frustration and concern. Over the last 4 days, 200,000 people from 148 countries have signed the ceasefire petition. At this rate, we could soon be the largest global online petition in history.
The pressure is working. The global outcry over this crisis has pushed the Ambassadors to the UN Security Council to work around the clock to achieve an immediate ceasefire.
The latest word is that the Council may be close to a final vote today or tomorrow, but we've been this close before and negotiations have fallen apart. We need more pressure now to close the deal(....) The pressure is working. Let's ratchet it up.
With hope,
Ricken Patel, Ceasefire Campaign"
